The mobile version of the popular Opera Web browser provides the basic functions that you’ve come to know and love – bookmarks, history and tabbed browsing among others – but using this browser on your mobile phone or tablet adds touch gestures and features for your small screen that allow you to quickly and effortlessly access your favorite websites on the fly.
Start Screen Shortcuts
Opera allows you to open your favorite sites with a single tap from the main screen with Speed Dial. Simply touch one of the blank spots, which feature the “+” sign, to add Facebook, Twitter or the website for your favorite news outlet to this screen. You can even add recently visited pages to this screen. When your interests change, you can long-press to remove any shortcuts that you no longer like.
You can speed up Opera Mini with its Turbo Boost feature, just like you can on your computer. This allows you to load blogs or social networks faster, even when you’re on a slow wireless connection or using Turbo on your phone in an area with low reception. Turbo compresses websites on Opera’s server, saving you time when you want to chat with friends or look up a recipe. Enable Turbo from the Advanced section of the Settings screen to get it started.
Open Options with Long Touch
Long-touching a text, link or even blank space will present you with options, much like right-clicking does with the mouse on your computer. When you long-press a link, you can open it in a new background tab and continue reading in the current tab. The same action over regular text allows you to quickly copy text for pasting into your search bar or texting programs. Remember to disable inline editing from the settings menu so that you can copy and paste content between apps!
Whenever you select text, you can move the arrows on either side of your select to include more or less text, making it easily to copy even multiple paragraphs of content on small phone screens. Long-clicking also allows you to edit or delete any Sped Dial option, bookmark or saved page to keep your browsing experience clutter-free.
When using Opera on a cell phone with a physical keyboard, an entirely new set of shortcuts become available for you. For example, press the asterisk to open up a new context menu that you can navigate with a trackpad or arrow keys. This menu includes up to nine Speed Dial entries and common tasks such as opening and closing tabs.
You can bypass this menu altogether by pressing the asterisks, followed by the left or right arrow to page through your currently open tabs. Similarly, you can open a new tab without touching your screen by pressing the asterisk followed by the up arrow. To open any of your saved Speed Dial entries, press the asterisk and then the corresponding number – “1” through “9”. If your keyboard requires you to hold the Function key to create numbers of symbols, make sure to press and hold this key to open Speed Dial entries from your keyboard.
Share Your Finds
When you’re sure your friends will want to know the latest in tech news or laugh at LOLcat images you find on the image, you can send this content from Opera Mini easily by pressing the menu button and hitting “Share.” Depending upon the capabilities and apps on your phone, you can send this data via Bluetooth, Facebook, Gmail, text message, email or even create a QR code for quick access. If you want to email yourself a Web page to visit at a later date, you might find this feature to be useful, too!
