Facebook is hands-down the most popular social networking site on the Web. And while there are plenty of reasons to stay on Facebook – not the least of which are the ability to stay connected to friends and family, share things with the world, and network with those who you might not otherwise be able to stay in contact with – there are also a couple of features most FB users would cheerfully do without.
One of the most widely despised aspects of Facebook is the fact that any one of your friends can add you to a group they own or are a member of. But just because your friends add you to groups at will doesn’t mean that you’re stuck there. Luckily, there are some simple steps you can take to distance yourself from a group you’d rather have nothing to do with.
If you’ve received a notification that one of your friends added you to a group, or if you notice that you’re suddenly being notified every time someone posts something in a group you didn’t join on your own, take the following steps to remove your name from the group:
Start by visiting the Facebook page of the group you want to remove yourself from. You can see a complete list of all he groups you belong to by clicking on the “more” link beside the word Groups on your home page’s left-side plane.
Once you’re on the group’s home page, find the settings icon. It’s a small gear, found to the far right underneath the cover image on the page. A drop-down menu will appear, giving you several options on how to manage your involvement with the group. Towards the bottom of this pull-down, you will see the option to leave the group. Click on this link, and then confirm that you wish to no longer be a part of the group when the window pops open to ask if you’re sure. This confirmation window is also where you can decide to let Facebook know you don’t wish to be re-added by any of the group’s other members.
If your reason for leaving the group includes things that violate Facebook policies or are offensive, including hate speech, harassment, SPAM, or explicit sexual or violent content, you can utilize the Report Group button. Located on the bottom corner of the confirmation box, this button will report the group to FB administrators for review.
You’re now free to go back to enjoying your favorite social media site without dealing with notifications for a group you never wanted to join!
